Phil's Disorder

Last year, my brother Phil, was diagnosed with Hemochromatosis.  This rare genetic disorder can cause a life of pain, but Phil has been strong throughout the entire process.  He continues to try to lead a life of normalcy, and not let Hemochromatosis change him.

Let me give an overview of what Hemochromatosis is, so that you, the readers, can get a better idea of what Phil is going through.  HH (hereditary hemochromatosis) is caused by a defect in the gene HFE which regulates the amount of Iron that the body absorbs from food.  The defect is known as C282Y, and if inherited from both parent's, can result in a build up of iron which can cause HH.  Once Iron builds up in body tissue, it can cause an array of side effects such as Arthritis, liver disease and heart abnormalities.   If HH is not treated, all of the side effects that come with it can be deadly.  Phil gets treated every few month's, so he will be able to live a normal and for the most part, healthy life.  He does not let HH effect him, and consistently rolls with the punches that he has been given.  HH is not a part of Phil's identity, and it will never be.
